Welcome to the first issue of the State of the Internet / Security report of 2019! We are
already a few weeks into the new year, and the holidays are now a memory. While the
first day of the year is just an arbitrary marker in time, it’s a good point of demarcation
to look back on the past and plan for the future.

Description

Bots are here to stay. As automation is made easier, bots represent both great business opportunities and increased risk. One example is the rise of “sneaker bots” – the use of resale bot networks to buy online limited edition products, to sell them for more than the original price in an aftermarket.

One hacker was discovered offering $15,000 USD to develop a sneaker bot, according to the latest Akamai 2019 State of the Internet / Security: DDoS and Application Attacks report. In the job listing, the hacker requested a freelance developer to create bots for websites such as Adidas, Nike, Supreme and Footlocker.
